Madrid, NY — General Grant will be joined once again by Civil War correspondent George Alfred Townsend in the Rudely Stamp’d play Grant on the Eve of Victory. The play will be performed as part of Fort Tribute’s fourth annual Civil War Weekend at 1PM on Saturday July 27th at the Speaker’s Tent (near the sawmill).
Starring writer/director Derek Maxfield as Gen. Ulysess S. Grant and Jess Maxfield as George Alfred Townsend, Grant on the Eve of Victory is a one act play centering around a late night interview with Gen. Grant in March of 1865 during his encampment at City Point, Virginia. The conversation captures Grant and Townsend at the precipice of the war’s end, following the fateful conference aboard the Navy steamer River Queen, where Grant, General William Tecumseh Sherman, and Admiral David Dixon Porter met with President Lincoln. As Grant provides tactful answers to the young reporter’s questions, he offers insight into his campaigns in the Western Theatre, the war’s leading commanders, and his expectations for what is to come.
The Fort Tribute event will also include a talk at 3PM on Saturday by Rudely Stamp’d founder Derek Maxfield about his book Hellmira: The Union’s Most Infamous Civil War Prison Camp – Elmira, NY. Books will be available for purchase and signing by the author and can be purchased in advance from the author’s website.
